The Robert Everd Outstanding Achievement Award

Mr. & Mrs. Bob Everd

In 1993, Bob Everd was the first Maryland Squash board member and officer to be awarded the Maryland Squash Outstanding Achievement Award for his many hours, days, and years of volunteer service. He was the recipient of the award again in 2008. Finally, after more than three decades of continued service to Maryland Squash, in all facets of managing the game, the Board of Governors named this most significant volunteer award in Bob’s honor: The Maryland Squash Robert Everd Outstanding Achievement Award.

Bob remains very much engaged in Maryland Squash – as a player and as a volunteer.

The Robert Everd Outstanding Achievement Award. acknowledges those who have been the most faithful stewards of the game.

Since 1907, a long line of volunteers have worked for the good of Maryland State Squash. They foster and manage Squash Racquets in Maryland. Some have been great players, some not. History

The Outstanding Achievement Award was first awarded in 1992. It was conceived by T. James Hense who was president of Maryland State Squash. The goal was to identify individuals in Maryland Squash that had, over an extended period, dedicated considerable time and energy to squash in Maryland and the State Association.

The Process

The Outstanding Achievement Award Committee, identifies individuals, who in its opinion are worthy candidates. The committee presents its recommendations to the Maryland Squash president and Maryland Squash Board of Governors. If approved, the candidate will be presented the award at a formal ceremony - a state or national tournament or special awards dinner.

There are three awards presented by Maryland Squash. They are the Hall of Fame, The Robert Everd Outstanding Achievement Award and the Nancy Cushman Impact Award. None are necessarily presented annually.

Naming of the Award

Until 2016, the award was known as the Outstanding Achievement Award. In 1992, it was presented, for the first time, to Bob Everd. Bob started playing squash in 1974 and in (1976-78) became directly involved in the administration of the state association. Bob has continued to serve Maryland Squash on various committees and as a member of the Board of Governors. Since 1978, Bob has held each of the association’s four governing offices: Treasure, Secretary, Vice President and President of the Maryland State Squash Racquets Association or MSSRA. In 2016, the association’s name was officially changed to “Maryland Squash”.

Bob has served on the committee of every National Championship hosted by Maryland Squash. He was chairman of the 1983 National Singles Championship, which was the first time Soft Ball (the international version of the game) was recognized as the official version of the sport for the United States Squash - National Singles Title. In 2008, in recognition of more than thirty consecutive years as an officer and/or board member of Maryland Squash, Bob was presented the Outstanding Achievement Award for a second time. He is the only individual to receive the award twice. Then in 2016, honoring Bob’s almost 40 years of uninterrupted service to Maryland Squash, the Outstanding Achievement Award was renamed to retroactively be: “The Robert Everd Outstanding Achievement Award” to be henceforth presented in his name.
